Special Congregational Meeting
A congregational meeting will be held on Sunday, August 12, following worship. The purpose of the meeting is to approve making bathrooms, outside doors and curbing handicap accessible.
An adult mid-week bible study is beginning in September on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday at 7pm. It will continue on those two Wednesdays monthly. The topic will be the Sunday readings. Mark your calendar now!
Golden Agers from Amazing Grace & Bethany Lutheran will be having a taste of Italy at our next outing on August 9 at 11:30 am at Olive Garden Restaurant in Hickory. We welcome anyone to join our lively group. We look forward to seeing our friends again for great fellowship. Please let Gail Wilcox know by August 6 so reservations can be made.
Highlights from meeting with Bishop Smith
Bishop Smith led the congregational study with 44 people present. It was a very productive and informative meeting. We answered 4 questions, (1) concerning Amazing Grace ministries, (2) what we want in the next 2 years, (3) what we want in our next pastor, and finally (4) what we needed the bishop/synod to know. The Call Committee was introduced. They are Bob Bisanar, De Clymer, Ellen Crider, Jerry Haas, Pat Haas, and Peggy Poe. Bishop Smith dismissed the meeting with prayer.
Church Council will meet August 13th at 7pm in the Annex.
Women of the ELCA
Women of the ELCA will meet August 19th following worship.
School Supplies Roundup
Thanks to everyone who brought school supplies for our community. During July we collected for our local teacher’s closet and SCCM. The first collected items have been delivered to the teachers’ closet drive. If you’ve not had a chance to bring school supplies to donate to SCCM we still have one more week! We have yet to receive any book bags, notebook paper, glue sticks, pencils or student scissors. If you can contribute, we will be delivering all remaining collected items to SCCM on August 14.
Amazing Grace Garden
We need tending helpers for our raised bed garden. The job takes about 15 minutes every other day or two and includes gathering vegetables as needed, pulling weeds if you see any, watering if it’s been dry for a few days and bring any gathered food to church on Sunday so we can share. Please speak with Bobby Lail for more information and to get on the “watering” list.
Collection for South Caldwell Christian Ministries
August is our second selected month to gather canned and dry goods food items for SCCM. Our January collection was light this year, less than 200 lbs. So a CHALLENGE has been cast for our congregation to collect AT LEAST DOUBLE the January amount. If every member gives 1 large/full size can of food to feed or neighbors we could have 100 lbs. What if we all gave a bit more and added a bag of flour, sugar, or rice? Or if we each brought 1 large size food item each week, could we make the CHALLENGE? Would we be giving too much to a family in need?
Shower Ministry Bags
Let’s get together August 22 around 6:45 to put together shower bags for the homeless. If 4 or 5 of us work together, we can have 30 bags ready to deliver in less than half an hour. Can you put this on your calendar to help out?
There’s a Yard Sale in the plans for late September. The Outreach committee will be needing assistance to bring the community another successful yard sale. Our last sale allowed us funds to provide extra shelving to our closets, some rental dollars for the U-Haul truck needed for a trip to Cherokee and other projects around our facility. More information will be coming soon. Please start looking around for donation items. We have a limited amount of space here to house yard sale goods so if you could store things for a few weeks, please let us know.
Back to School Bash
On August 11 from 10:30am to 2:00pm there will be a special Back to School Bash at Grace Chapel Methodist Church, our neighbors up the road. There will be games, food, free school supplies and exhibits. This is a great time to bring students and teachers for a fun afternoon before school starts. The “Bash” is a collaborative effort between Southern Caldwell churches including Amazing Grace, nonprofit organizations and the business community.
Thank you to the Fellowship Committee for planning and to all who brought food for our hot dog luncheon July 8th. It was a wonderful celebration of the USA with great decorations, good food and time to visit with each other. When we take the time for fellowship with one another we all have an opportunity to know and understand each other more.
