December 2018 Newsletter

Congregational Meeting

The Annual Congregational Meeting will be held on Sunday December 2. The purpose of the meeting will be to approve the recommended 2019 Budget and to approve four current members serving on Church Council to serve for the next three years each.

Advent Calendar Basket

The Worship Team is sponsoring an Advent Calendar Basket project, which everyone is invited to participate in during the month of December. Each household will be given a basket and a list of items, one for each day in December. For example, Dec. 1 is a box of spaghetti; Dec. 2 is a box of macaroni; Dec. 3 is a bag of pinto beans; etc. Simply place the listed item in the basket each day as you count UP to Christmas! Bring your basket on Christmas Eve (or before if you’ll be out of town) and place it under the tree. We will bless the items during the Christmas Eve Candlelight Service and then provide them to South Caldwell Christian Ministries or use them in our hygiene kits. We hope everyone will participate and help us gather much needed items for members of our community.

Decorating the Worship Center

On December 8, at 9:30am, the Worship Team will be decorating the Chrismon Tree and putting up all the decorations for Christmas in the worship center. They need all the help they can get.

Congregational Christmas Lunch

Our congregation’s Christmas meal is scheduled for December 16. We are planning a soup, salad and sandwich meal. As usual, there will be a sign-up sheet for suggested food items on the opportunity board. Please feel free to invite family and friends.

Children's Christmas Program

The Children's Christmas Program will be held on December 16 immediately following worship and prior to our soup and sandwich meal.

Candlelight Christmas Service

Our candlelight Christmas service will be on December 24th at 7pm. The service will be a service of Lessons and Carols with Holy Communion being celebrated. We will be singing many of our favorite Christmas Carols. Christmas is simply not Christmas without taking time to worship and honor the one whom we celebrate this season. Jesus is the reason for the season may be cliché, but absolutely true. Plan now to come on this the Holiest of nights and invite someone to come with you.

Bible Study

The Bible Study group will meet on December 12, but there will be no Bible Study on December 26

Golden Agers

Golden Agers will not meet this month

Women of the ELCA

Women of the ELCA Will Meet December 9 Following Worship.

Church Council

Church Council Will Meet December 10 – 7pm in the Annex

Notes from the Outreach Team

Thanks to everyone who participated in our Thanksgiving and Veterans Day Meal on November 18. We had time to visit and catch up with one another and plenty of food. If you didn’t stay for the meal, please do next time. Breaking bread together is a simple and laid back way to get to know others, especially if you sit with people you’ve not met.

The Outreach committee is happy to report that the participation we’ve had this year enabled us to provide almost double the clothing request at Brockford Inn. We not only gave more clothes than first promised, but also were able to put together several personal care kits as an extra treat for the residents.

And we reached out to families in need by providing Angel Tree gifts for eight children in our area. These gifts included pants and shirt, underwear, pajamas and two toys for each child. The Angel Tree gifts were delivered to SCCM for distribution to the families. Parents/guardians get to take the gifts home and wrap them for their children. Thank you for helping our community!

The Outreach Committee is always open to new project ideas and assistance with on-going activities. If you have ideas for ways our congregation can reach out to the community and/or invite people in for happenings, please share. A planning meeting for 2019 will be set soon and all are welcome to attend.

If there are people in the congregation that would like to be part of a December delivery to Living Waters Church in Cherokee, please let Outreach know. We’d like to go up soon and take some decorations, toys and warm clothing that have been recently donated.

Our congratulations to Susan Whittemore who will be graduating this month (December) with a Master's Degree in Biology. May God continue to bless you in your endeavors.

Call Committee

The Call Committee has submitted the Ministry Site Profile to the Synod and is now waiting for the Synod to schedule a training session for the Call Committee. Following the training they will begin to look at available candidates suitable for Amazing Grace. Christ United Lutheran Church has paid off the balance of their Promissory Note to us for the St. Matthew facility. They had been making monthly payments, which has been being deposited into our Building Fund, since they purchased the property

Advance care planning is a process to help your loved ones know how to speak for you if you are ever unable to make your own medical decisions. It is planning for the unexpected. Caldwell Hospice and the Caldwell Senior Center partner to offer two Advance Care Planning Workshops at no cost to the community will be held on December 13 – 1:30pm at Caldwell Senior Center and December 27 – 1:30pm at McCreary Family Professional Center. Notaries and witnesses will be available to help anyone who wants to complete their documents at the workshop. For more information, or to register, call 828/758-2883.

If You Look for Me at Christmas…

If you look for me at Christmas,

you won’t need a special star;

I’m no longer just in Bethlehem,

I’m right there where you are.

You may not be aware of Me amid the celebrations.

You’ll have to look beyond the stores and all the decorations.

But if you take a moment from your list of things to do,

and listen to your heart, you’ll find I’m waiting there for you.

You’re the one I want to be with,

you’re the reason that I came,

and you’ll find Me in the stillness,

as I’m whispering your name.

Love, Jesus
